The Barberton Makhonjwa Mountains is South Africa’s most recently proclaimed World Heritage Site. This is one of 10 World Heritage properties in South Africa and was inscribed by UNESCO on the 2nd of July 2018. It is only our fourth natural world heritage property with the others being cultural and mixed properties. Covering an area of 113 137 ha, and located in the south-eastern corner of Mpumalanga Province in South Africa, it contains the oldest and best preserved sequence of volcanic and sedimentary rocks on earth and an exceptionally rich diversity of plant species, all set in spectacular scenery. QUEENS RIVER ADVENTURE CAMP & QUEENS ROSE HIKING TRAIL, LOCATED WITHIN THE BARBERTON MAKHONJWA MOUNTAINS
Whilst the Makhonjwa Mountains’ Geotrail can be a self drive route stopping at the spectacular view sites along the way, the BEST way to explore this area is on foot and to spend time staying deep within the mountains, forests and valleys of this spectacular wilderness. Set in the breath-taking Makhonjwa Mountains the Queen Rose hiking trail is most certainly one of South Africa’s most spectacular. It winds 26km through mountain passes, indigenous forests and over the Queen River and Montrose Plantation. Along the route you will be treated to a wide variety of indigenous plants and animal species, including 350 types of birds. Anyone can do this hike as long as you have a reasonable level of fitness and a good pair of hiking boots. You will be blown away by the spectacular views, incredible wildlife, entertaining river crossings and perfectly placed natural splash pools.
For those seeking an authentic hiker’s experience, the 2 huts provide the perfect basic accommodation, whilst those looking for something special, the Delfonté Chalets nestled in the picturesque grassy mountains, is the place to stay (these units can also be booked for non hikers). Other accommodation on offer include Dormitory Style units ideal for school, church or student groups. The 6 bedroom Self catering Hiker’s House & the 4 bedroom Old Farm Guesthouse; as well as the rustic Nelshoogte Forestry Station Log Cabin. In addition to hiking, MTB and 4×4 trails are also on offer.
